Burlap Memo Board {Ballard Designs inspired}

Who else just loves getting Ballard Designs catalogs?  I spend so much time browsing the pages when ours arrives.  I have yet to purchase anything from there however.  I have such an issue paying for shipping but I have been able to find several items in other stores that look just like they are from the store!

I'm working on sprucing up my craft "space." It's not quite a room as it's the closet underneath our staircase but it is a decent size for me to be able to hide and organize all my stuff.

I wanted something on the wall to display some of my ideas for craft or home projects and was leaning towards a framed corkboard.  Then I saw this in the Ballard catalog.

Burlap Message Boards

Simple. Neutral.  Perfect.

Of course at $49 for a 15 x 20 I was not going to be ordering one of these!

Initially I thought I could cover some foam board with burlap but then I remembered in my guest room I had this failed project from two years ago.

I gave it a quick coat of white spray paint.

Once it dried I measured and cut out my burlap.

Then it was as simple as folding the fabric and stapling with my staple gun.

One the burlap was attached I flipped it over and set the upholstery tacks.

They only required a light tap with the hammer.

The best part of this project for me was that I had all the supplies, except for the upholstery tacks on hand, making this project practically free!  Much better then the $49 price tag from Ballard!

  2. Is it just a canvas or did you put cork board on top of the canvas to make it pinable??

    1. Thanks for asking Michele! No cork board involved just the burlap right on the canvas and it works perfectly!

  4. Same question as above, what exactly did you use? It looks like a canvas. Does it really work as a pin board?

  5. Just saw one of these at TJ Maxx yesterday--loved the look but didn't check the price. Then I found your version at Knock Off Decor. Excellent job!

    1. I actually bought the one at TJ Maxx about 3 weeks ago and paid $19.99. Not sure if that is cheaper than doing it yourself but if you have to purchase all of the supplies it may be close. Looks just like the Ballard one.
